What to Expect

Okay, I'm going to be honest here.  I dream big when it comes to new projects, and this site is a new project.  I have no idea if I'll be able to follow through on this update schedule.  I'm going to give it a shot, though.  Here's what I'm hoping for:

Sunday:  Novel Serialization Release Day

Sunday each week I plan on releasing one chapter of my novel, so if you're curious about it, or just don't want to pay for it, you can read along.  Fifty-two chapters, fifty-two weeks, and you can read the whole thing.  Or you can help me out and buy a copy of the book here.

Tuesday/Thursday:  The Blog

Tuesday and Thursday I plan on doing some blogging.  My interests are all over the place so I can't say what that'll look like exactly, it'll probably change from week to week.

* * *

Who is this guy?

I'm a 32 year old American living in Canada. I'm married, and I have a pile of interests that I like talking about. They aren't similar to one another, and it's a near certainty that not everything on this website is for you. There's probably something that interests you though, so I'll try and tag my posts so you can find what you're looking for. Here's the kind of stuff you might find.

When I was a kid I wanted to program video games for a living. Then I quickly realized that I loved the idea of being a program because I loved telling stories, but I hated actually programming anything. I picked up the pen and started writing and it's been my deepest and most enduring passion ever since.

There is somewhere - in my mother's basement, perhaps - a laminated and bound book by me (at age 8 or so) called "The War," where a team of dinosaurs storm a castle protected by a series of Indiana Jones-esque traps.

My writing style has improved over the years, but as far as raw ideas go, I may have peaked early.

My wife bakes impressive looking and delicious cakes, but when it comes to actual meals, I handle it. I enjoy it. Food is delicious. You should totally try it. I post the recipes I like with no bullshit: If I haven't tried it and liked it, I won't post it.

Teaching and Travel

I've traveled the globe and loved it - from my hometown in Michigan, to New York, to South Korea - and most of the time I've traveled I've done it because of a new teaching job. So I have stuff to say about education and stories of my almost always amazing experiences in different parts of the world, and the two are very often linked.

Currently the most beautiful place in the world I've ever been: Ullengdo, South Korea. It's an island in the Pacific Ocean with nothing on it but a fishing village. It's beautiful, scenic, and quiet. It might be the best place in the world to set up a hammock and nap away the day as you listen to the waves and smell the sea air.

Poker, Math, and Gambling

I spent a few years as a professional poker player. It was exciting and rewarding both intellectually and financially, but eventually the stress of it started wearing me thin, so I moved on to other things. I'm not sure how much I'll say about it in the future, but I've said some things about it in the past that people find valuable or interesting, so I've left those entries here.

Being A New Parent

My wife and I just recently had our first child. It's exhausting, it grates on your soul, it kills your productivity, and it's also one of the most interesting and fulfilling things that's ever happened in my life. I have no regrets, we're thrilled it's happening, and I'm as happy as I've ever been. I'm sure I'll have more to say about it in the future.
